How non-US-resident nomads use a US LLC in 2026: setup, banking, US-source income rules, paperwork (5472/1120), and where this structure actually saves tax — and where it does not.

Frequently asked
- Can a non-US-resident own a US LLC?
- Yes. A single-member US LLC owned by a non-resident is a common structure for nomads selling services to US clients. It is treated as a disregarded entity for federal tax — income flows to the owner personally.
- Does a US LLC reduce my tax automatically?
- No. The LLC by itself does not save tax — your personal tax residency does. If you have no US-source effectively connected income and no US tax residency, the LLC profits typically are not US-taxed; you still owe tax wherever you are tax resident.
- What paperwork is required?
- A single-member non-resident LLC must file Form 5472 with a pro-forma 1120 annually, plus state filings. The penalty for missing 5472 is severe ($25,000). Most owners pay a specialist accountant to handle this each year.
- Can I open a bank account for my US LLC remotely?
- Yes, with neo-banks built for non-resident founders. You usually need the LLC formation documents, your EIN, and ID. Set this up after the LLC and EIN are in place; expect 1-3 weeks total.
- Is a US LLC right for every nomad?
- No. It fits service businesses billing US/Western clients and owners who have stable tax residency elsewhere. It does not magically remove tax, and the compliance burden is real. Talk to a cross-border accountant before incorporating.
