Health-Insurance Requirements for Digital Nomad Visas, Explained
Nearly every nomad visa requires health coverage — what minimum sums and conditions consulates look for, and how to get a policy that passes the application.

Frequently asked
- What level of coverage do nomad visas usually require?
- Most ask for a policy valid in the destination country for the full stay, covering at least a stated minimum — commonly in the tens of thousands of euros or dollars — for medical treatment and often repatriation. The exact figure is set per country.
- Does my travel insurance count?
- Often not. A short-trip travel policy may exclude long stays, pre-existing conditions or "living" in a country. Nomad visas typically want coverage designed for extended residence, so read the visa text and match the policy to it.
- What should the policy document actually show?
- Your name, the coverage period matching your intended stay, the territory (the destination explicitly included), and the coverage amount in writing, ideally with a confirmation letter the consulate can verify. Vague proof gets applications rejected.
- Can I buy coverage that adjusts as I move?
- Yes — nomad-oriented insurers offer subscriptions you can start, pause and extend as you travel, and that issue the documentation visa offices expect. That flexibility is the whole point when your itinerary is not fixed a year ahead.
